I consider it a great privilege and honour to have been called upon to deliver the first lecture in the Devraj Chanana Memorial Series. Learning Sanskrit in the traditional manner at Hardwar, Chanana completed his formal education in Paris. He imbibed the best elements of traditional and modern cultures and contributed to their deeper understanding through lectures and publications. Participation in nationalist and progressive movements gave realistic dimensions to his studies, Chanana's varied interests covered Sanskrit, Hindi,Punjabi,Bengali, social and economic history, social anthropology , etc., A gifted linguist, he wrote with felicity in several languages. He produced his book Slavery in Ancient India in French and translated it into English; the book was also rendered into Russian.
