Among the materials collected by late Shri Puran Chand for a history of the communist movement in India and currently lodged in the Archives on contemporary History, Jawaharlal Nehru University ,has a corpus of folk songs from different parts of the country. joshi's effort in this direction reflect a view of history which is sensitive to the experience and consciousness of the people as expressed through popular cultural forms. The history of no society can be really apprehended except through the vocabulary of its own people. Joshi first tried to enter this terrain of history by collecting the folk songs related to one of the heroic episodes in the history of India - the Revolt 1857.
