To begin with I am anxious to express my profound thanks to The Indian Council of Philosophical Research, New Delhi, which, by awarding me a National fellowship, has given me enough time to devote myself fully to philosophical activity. Without this, I could hardly complete the present manuscript within a reasonably short time. Besides, about two years back I had an assignment form the ICPR to prepare a manuscript, which, I understand, is going to be shortly published with the title CARVAKA / LOKAYATA : An Anthology of Source-materials and Significant Scholars in India and abroad have for preparing this back at it. Much of the materials collected for preparing this manuscript have been in the present book.
