In 1962 I was awarded a scholarship under culture exchange programme between the governments of India and the USSR),On that scholarship I proceeded to Moscow for higher studies in history. Dr. K. A. Antonova of the Institute of Peoples of Asia, now Institute of Oriental Studies (Academy of Sciences, USSR), Moscow, suggested that I should investigate the impact of western expansionism on preindustrial economies of India. This would throw light on Indo-European interaction in the context of the level attained by local Indian economies, and the nature of local business and artisan communities. The idea was quite invicing and our choice fell on Gujarat, which had experienced the initial European impact.
