This book is a modified version of my doctoral dissertation which was completed at the Centre for Russian and East European Studies, university of Birmingham in 1974. Essentially the book explores the relationship between consumption and accumulation in a socialist economy durind so-called phase of "extensive growth" The first part sets out a simple model of extensive growth with an eye to its relevance to the Soviet industrialisation experience between 1929-37; and in the second part the book examines the concrete experience of Soviet industrialisation in the light of the modal developed earlier.
