The monograph is the result of my visit to GDR-or popularly, East Germany -for eight months in 1973-74, under the Indo-GDR cultural exchange programme. It is based mainly on published mate rial and on the numerous discussion I had with scholars, managers and others. The notes that I made there could take note of data up to 1972, but thanks to the latest statistical years books and other publications that i received from the GDR Embassy in India and from Prof Dr E. Rempel of the Department of Economics Faculty of Horticulture, Humboldt University, Berlin, I could revise my earlier draft to incorporate data up to 1974 and some information pertaining to 1975 and 1976.
