Demodar Dharmanand Kosambi was not a practicing historian, but the four books and sixty articles that he wrote made such a great impact on the world of Indian history that during the last fifteen years or so there has been hardly an significant publication which doses not take note of his views. The questions that he raised and the suggestions that he made are being debated in the classrooms and seminars. An outstanding mathematician, Kosambi not only raised numismatics to the level of exact science by applying statistical methods to it but also enriched our theoretical understanding of ancient Indian history as a whole. His researches have altered both the approach to early India and the methods of its study. Unfortunately he did not receive much of formal recognition form historians in his lifetime. The present collection of essays is a belated, posthumous tribute of his fellow workers to his brilliance and many sided scholarship.
