The problems of Calcutta's growth have been discussed widely over recent years in the press, in parliament and through scholarly publications by Indian and foreign writers. But the state of urbanisations in West Bengal and the region constituting Calcutta's hinterland has received comparatively less attention. While preparing papers on various aspects of urbanisation in this part of India, I was slowly driven to conclusion that this urban crisis has its roots in the particular history of this region and is generated by the nature of underdevelopment affecting it.
