Professor R. S. Sharma, Chairman, Indian Council of Historical Research, Requested me early in 1973 to take up the work of writing the history of the role of the legislature in Bangal in relation to India's struggle for freedom, I readily accepted the proposal. It meant diversion for two to three years, from my main field of investigation, which is the impact of the communist Movement on the Freedom struggle in Bengal, i did so, because this was a challenging offer and a field so far largely not covered by others.
