UNTIL A FEW TEARS AGO the newly - independent states of Africa were shown on maps as patches of territories under the occupation of different European powers. Even as late as 1956 there were only eight independent states in Africa, Morocco, Sudan and Tunisia and three in the sub - saharan region. Then came, like a catalyst, the independence of Ghana in March 1957. As the first 'black state' in the postwar era,Ghana inflamed the imagination of the rest of colonial Africa. It proved by example thet ' the political kingdom' was within the reach of attitude which was immediately felt in the language and politics of African nationalism.
