I have been thinking on production relations in Indian agriculture for quite a number of years. I must confess that several papers I produced during this time left me unsatisfied. While they dwelt on some features of capitaliast formation, they neglected the interactions between different sectors, for instance between subsistence agriculture, peasant economy and the capitalist sector in a multisectoral economy. A through study of Lenin's writings impressed upon me the importance of looking at the agrarian economy in transition when precapitalist sectors influence capitalist formation. The best way to study this, I thought, was to make an interstate comparison of agrarian relations because the agriculture of different states has different historical backgrounds and is now at different stages of development.
